#TransActing: A Market of Values 11/07/15

Dan Scott and I have just run a live discursive/evaluative space (an adapatation of 'Open' that we've been running at Resort in Margate) at the following event:

"#Transacting at Chelsea College of Arts is a free one-day market with a difference: in addition to presenting goods in exchange for money, stalls will invite people to swap skills, services, repairs, knowledge and other resources. There will be a BYO-BBQ (you bring the food; we grill it), a fablab, a skillshare, a pinhole photography booth, a listening stand, a bricklaying demonstration, refreshments-for-promises, a speakers’ corner, organ donation—even a kiosk buying tears.

The 50+ stalls at this bustling pop-up market will be run by artists, designers, civil-society groups, academics, ecologists and activists and hosted in specially-made structures built by research group, Critical Practice, art and architecture practice, public works, and others.

The event will explore alternative ideas and kinds of ‘value’ and to celebrate shared experience and collective endeavour. Multiple currencies will circulate, not all of them monetary".

Work and Art: How Artists Make a Living Symposium 26/03/15

Our final Collaborative Research group (CRG) symposium is coming up at the end of the month.

It will investigate and examine the multiple ways in which artists, curators and writers sustain themselves economically. Very few artists work solely as artists and this symposium will focus on the variety of ways in which artists supplement their incomes, looking at the relationship between economic activity and creative output. The symposium provides a space for considering the backstage aspects of being an artist/arts practitioner, considering the various ways in which artists earn money or labour (as non-artists) to support their artistic careers, and what it means for artists to occupy these multiple roles in society. We aim to sample a breadth of current artistic economic activity, and have invited practitioners to present innovative approaches to survival as an arts practitioner.

Presenting: Tatiana Baskakova, Emma Braso, Collaborative Research Group, Sam Curtis, Rebecca Gordon-Nesbitt, Susan Jones, Hurley and Thornton, Sarah Jones, Shama Khanna, Robert Laycock, Jasmine Pradissitto, Holly Rogers, Angus Sanders-Dunnachie, Tania Skakun and Carlos Noronha Feio.

With a *reading room & exhibition consisting of publications, films and artwork by:
Fani Bitou, Catterall/Martin, Jason Haynes, Alice Kemp, Sophie Mallet, Antonia Meile, Rose Parish and The Public Zine Library.

"Digital Echoes 2015 brings together artists, researchers and practitioners interested in exploring how digital environments intervene in the creation, documentation, circulation and reception of culture. The focus of this year’s event is on the potential and limits of digital technology for affording new ways to engage with traditional forms of cultural heritage as audience, user, artist, author, researcher and co-creator".

My contribution is a performance lecture exploring the status of artwork on my laptop in relation to questions of spectatorship and usership as defined by philosopher Stephen Wright.

The Bureau of Archives, Memories & Ephemera 03/12/14

I'm in Ethnographic Terminalia 2014: "A thematic reflection on the archive and its discontents: Washington’s identity as the seat of American political power is amplified through its role as the locus of its own memorialization. Where there is history, there is haunting. By drawing on the archive’s unnerving, uncanny, and ephemeral specters, this exhibition is an effort to re-imagine and reposition archives as sites which not only have the capacity to produce and contest historical memory, but also generate significant gaps and blind spots."

TOUR BIENNALE 07/06/14

Participants will join artist Anna Hart for a silent walk, gather food with professional forager Michael White, speculate on property with surveyor Mike Lilford and accompany artist Trish Scott as she “reads” a street.

Providing four distinct encounters with Whitstable, Tour Biennale is a choreographed exploration of the town that seeks to navigate the spaces between the Biennale’s official programme of works. Winding through the town and taking in a number of artworks the tour will start and finish at the The HQ, ending with a BBQ on the beach. The event is free and open to all but places are limited so booking is essential.

CCW MA Residency - Joya, Cortijada Los Gázquez 16-23 April 10/04/11

I'm shortly leading a residency to Joya, Cortijada Los Gázquez, for 9 CCW MA students. We've already had 2 preparatory seminars - a workshop with Brave New Alps on collaboration, and one with Louise Short on working site specifically.

Here's the project outline:

For one week 9 MA Fine Art students from Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges of Art will undertake an intensive period of research and development at Cortijada Los Gázquez focusing on what site specificity, sustainability and collaboration can mean to the artist in the context of rural Almeria. Participants will extend their normal practice into a new environment, developing site based research skills, whilst at the same time exploring the collaborative potential of being in a group, working with a shared space and shared resources. A week of practical experimentation, alongside workshops and critical discussion will lead to proposals for site-based works (which may or may not be realised in the future.)
